| The annual artillery weekend is quickly
approaching. It's time to prepare for our trip to Murfreesboro,
Tennessee. This year, the entire weekend is in our care. We will
be taking both of our pieces and will need all hands present. The
flies will be set up Friday evening. We will breakfast both days at
our traditional meeting place - Shoney's in downtown Murfreesboro.
Saturday evening, we will reprise the miniature games in the park workshop
area, as we have in years past. Norris Darrall will be bringing
the troops, now out |
of hibernation. We will muster at 8
o'clock each morning and will provide firing demonstrations on the hour.
The NPS manual is being sent in the mail. Contact Chuck if you
haven't received it by Friday, July 5th.

| Our pards from the Mill Springs Battery have
invited us to attend the living history weekend in September. We had a
great weekend last year at this event. There were many spectators
present last year and the awkward squad drills were enjoyed |
by all. We plan on firing a couple of
canister rounds on Saturday evening, after the park closes to the public.
And Bill Neikirk plans to feed us a great supper on Saturday night. Period
tents of all kinds are |
welcomed and encouraged. We will take one
or two pieces, depending on the response. Notify Eric of your
intention to attend by sending him your telegram -

| Event Report:
Brass Band Festival 2002 |
| Our small band of blue led the parade on
Saturday morning. Our colors led the parade. It was heartening
to see folks stand (if they were sitting) and remove hats and cover their
hearts with their right hands. It has been many years since we've seen
this kind of respect for our colors from the public. Those present
included Bill Baas, Greg Dodge, Wayne Fielder and Chuck Warnick. Due
to lack of interest in this event (voted maximum effort at the annual
meeting), the Tent-o-Wonders didn't appear. Many townsfolk expressed
disappointment, as a very large front-page article had appeared in the
Danville Advocate Messenger the previous week, telling them about the
members of the 7th Kentucky that were coming and about the display. It's too
bad we didn't support this event - we had the support from the community and
the press. |

| Event Report - Oak
Hill Cemetery Memorial Day Service |
| Once again, the 5th Battery - Indiana Light
Artillery honored the memory of our country's soldiers at Oak Hill Cemetery,
as a part of the VFW's |
annual ceremonies. Those present were
Eric Essex, Wade Gish, Larry Price, Larry's grandson, J.T., Ed Essex, Barry
Duvall, Eliot Handziak |
and and old friend from the 14th Indiana, Walt
Wells. We are proud to serve in this fashion. Well Done, Boys! |
| Event Report - Billie
Creek Village |
| The Battery Boys were proud to report with
green teeth.... Well, we might want to go back to the beginning of
this story. There was a surprise birthday celebration for Capt. Essex
during this event. Everyone shared in a piece of his birthday cake,
which had blue icing. So, you know what happened next. |
And Andy Newlon, son of that crusty veteran,
Gary Newlon, saw the elephant for the first time and stood bravely through
the whole affair. Rumor has it that dad was a tad nervous, but Eric
kept a close eye and all was well. Capt. Essex reports good
cooperation amongst the artillery at this event and a good |
time was had by our batt boys. Those
present included Eric Essex, Norris Darrall, Mark Pettry, Larry Price, Gary
Newlon, Tom Melton, and Andy Newlon. And Bruce Hill, of Naperville,
fell in to lend a hand on Saturday. |
| Somebody left the 3" Ordnance Rifle out in the
rain... and it shrunk! Actually, this comes from 1989 at a small event in
Veedersburg, Indiana. Michael Fulkerson and his cousins still have
this 3/4 scale piece, which, by the way, was faithfully reproduced.
One more fact... we lost the artillery drill competition that year
because we were "too authentic".

Essex and Daniel Conners. |

It must have been the aggressive stance
that brought Pvt. Bubby to the post of Divisional Chief of Artillery....? |
