Event Reports

Stones River Battlefield Park - Murfreesboro, Tennessee

Another successful year, our 15th annual return by all best guesses.  The weather was tolerable, the Saturday breakfast was outstanding (thanks to EW and George), except we consumed all the supplies for both mornings in one sitting - typical veteran behavior. We had the annual Sunday breakfast at Shoney's and a nice supper on Saturday night at Ryan's Steakhouse (drove them into bankruptcy by our consumption).  The visitor's center was undergoing some serious renovation.  The orange fence in the photographs was the safety barrier.

Capt. Essex commanded the right section, consisting of the NPS detachments from Chickamauga Battlefield Park and Stones River Battlefield Park.  Lt. Warnick commanded the left section, consisting of the 5th Indiana and the Mill Springs Battery.  Sgt. Baas served as Chief of the Piece and Cpl. Darrall served as gunner for the detachment.

This event is also drawing near.  The battery boys have pre-registered 8 "John Doe" spaces.  Registration fees will be $10 per person.  Battery and transport fees for detachment participants will be an additional $15.  August 25th is the deadline for registering with the unit.

A Reminder for the Battery Boys...
Our policy for event attendance and related fees was approved by the membership at our last annual meeting.

If you plan to attend, you must commit by the unit deadline.  This allows us to determine well in advance of the event whether or not one or more of our pieces will travel to the event.

Once committed, you are responsible for paying the battery fee and transport fee for the event.  In times past, we had commitments from folks who for whatever reason were not able to attend.  This left those who did attend with the responsibility for covering the transport and battery fees (e.g. ten fellows commit, but only six show).  We divided up equally the costs by the number who attended.  Frankly, this wasn't a fair arrangement.  We have to pay as we go, as maintenance, insurance and transport can be costly.

We do allow walk-on participation, as long as the event allows walk-on registration.  Your share of the fees will be the same as those who made the pre-event commitment.  Our members are always welcome to come.  But if less than 8 members commit by the deadline, the event may be scrubbed.

Talk with Capt. Essex or Treasurer Chuck Warnick if you have questions.
