Flag Fragment

We have obtained another large fragment of the 7th Kentucky's regimental flag.  This flag, which was not listed on the inventory of the Kentucky Military History Museum, but still disappeared, was cut into pieces, individually framed and sold.  Over the years, we have endeavored to purchase these pieces as they show up.  Many thanks to those who have pledged to support this acquisition.  And special thanks to Roger Adams, for acting in our stead on E-Bay.  The fragment, still in the frame, was conveyed to Bill Baas for safe-keeping.  The following individuals pledged to support this effort (in the order pledges were received):
Roger Adams Bill Baas
Chuck and Carolyn Warnick  Bill Krebs
Charles and Cindy Lemons  John Cleaveland
Richard and Nancy Stallings Seth Anderson
If you would like to contribute to this purchase, you may send your check, made payable to 7th Kentucky, Inc.

This from Drew Andrews:

Greetings. There are finally details to report regarding the upcoming Camp Nelson event (September 10-12, 2004). Please distribute these to those who need to know within your organizations.

The website has been updated with maps, schedule, and scenario information:
      http://campnelson.kentuckyregiments.org/cnlh2004.htm

A followup email to this one will summarize specific portrayals and activities for each general group we have participating at the upcoming event: USCT, US Volunteers (infantry and artillery), Sanitary Commission, refugees, camp headquarter staff, and quartermaster. Background information on some of these groups can be found in the Living History Resource pages at the website:
      http://campnelson.kentuckyregiments.org/cn_lhrc.htm

RSVP's (help!):
I have received very few; if you know of folks attending, please contact me. As far as I know, I have commitments from two full scale USV guns and crews (7th Ky/Stones and Mill Springs), the 12th USCHA gun and crew, and the 5th USCT (infantry) from northern Ohio. The 5th will be accompanied by their civilians for the refugee impression. I have roughly 10 USV infantry attending (7th Ky and friends). The camp HQ, Quartermaster, and two folks portraying period newspaper reporters have agreed to attend. The Sanitary Commission has developed laundress, school, infirmary, and cooking impressions.

REGISTRATION FEE(?):
A suggested donation of $10 per person will be collected for the Camp Nelson Foundation. Please make any checks payable to the Camp Nelson Foundation. This is not mandatory, but expect the hat to be passed during the event as at previous events.

NECESSITIES:
Water is available at spigots near the campsites. Wood and straw will be available. Please let me know how many bales of straw you think your organization will require. Portable toilets are typically nearby near the parking lot. Saturday lunch will be provided for participants as part of the scenario. Other meals will be your own responsibility (see below!). If you bring bulk foods for your unit, ration issues can be arranged: let me know if you wish to do this.

SCHEDULE, a general summary:
Saturday morning, the US Volunteer troops will turn in morning reports, set up guards, drill, etc as if a normal day of camp life is beginning. At 9:00 AM, a group of African-American recruits, tired, some wounded, will arrive "from Danville." They will initially be turned away by the Camp HQ, and will be referred to the Sanitary Commission for support and medical attention. At roughly 10:00 AM, the Camp HQ will receive orders that they are to enroll and train the USCT soldiers. Each soldier will receive replica enlistment papers during the enrollment process. At about this time, the USCT families will begin arriving as refugees, and fall under the care of the Sanitary Commission.

CN Foundation folks are looking into getting food supplies donated/paid for to supply a Saturday lunch via the Sanitary Commission. Details to follow. IF YOU CAN DONATE SOMETHING in bulk to contribute to the cooking effort (such as a bag of onions or potatos, etc) please let me know ASAP to avoid unnecessary costs or duplication of purchases. Other meals will be on your own (or will consist of SanComm leftovers), unless you make other arrangements amongst yourselves. (i.e. the Sanitary Commission has suggested a Saturday supper for officers: this is between the SanComm and the officers, etc).

Saturday afternoon will include drill for military participants, and continued camp life activities with the Sanitary Commission and refugees (laundress, school, infirmary) and a Sanitation Inspection of the military camps. A game of cricket is also in the works for Saturday afternoon. At 4:00 PM on Saturday afternoon, a Homecoming is scheduled for descendants of Camp Nelson USCT soldiers. For any who have not experienced this in the past, plan to attend and you'll be reminded of why we do living history.

A church service Sunday morning will be followed by more drill and camp life. At 2:00 PM on Sunday, a grave dedication/ memorial will take place offsite (but nearby, about a mile away) for a USCT soldier in a local cemetery.

OTHER STUFF GOING ON:
There will be a "craft show" of sorts there that weekend. People will be demonstrating different crafts and skills similar to those used by civilian employees at Camp Nelson. The event host has promised to ensure that these activities will be physically separate and distinct from our event.

I'll be posting more info to the website over the coming days, and will send emails to update everyone to the changes as they are made.

After Action Report - Stones River

A great time was had by all.  We fielded three pieces, with The Stones River crew filling out the half-battery.  Wires got crossed as to schedule and we lost a good portion of the Mill Springs crew, but there's always next year.  EW did the cooking and we had great meals.  Next year, we will return to the time-honored tradition of Shoney's for Breakfast and Saturday dinner out.  And the traditional miniature game was held.
We received a letter from the Superintendent, thanking us for our participation.  Click here to read the letter.  We also received a copy of the program evaluation, which will help us to plan for next year's presentation.  If you haven't seen the photos, click here.

Carriages and Ammunition Chests have been Re-stenciled

The refinishing is now complete.  The labeling has been re-done for the axle covers and the ammunition chests.  If you haven't seen the photos, click here.  Thanks, EW, for donating the funds to complete this work.

From the Quartermaster

We will be taking inventory of the 7th Kentucky, Inc. equipment in September.  This inventory list will be available to the membership for inspection. -  EW

That is all the news fit to print. Be sure to pre-register by the event deadlines to ensure inclusion on the roster.
