Preservation Efforts : Jefferson Davis' Birthday cancelled due to lack of interest
Posted by Wayne_Fielder on 2008/2/26 14:20:00 (964 reads)

This is really kind of sad. The members of the 7th Kentucky Inc generally come from a Union ancestry with a few Confederate ancestors sprinkled in for flavor. If we have learned anything in our study of the war and the soldiers who fought it it is that the preservation of their memory is critically important no matter what side they served.

Mississippi can't quite seem to get this celebration of Jefferson Davis off the ground. Nobody seems to want to step up and claim him. As a Kentuckian I'm just as proud of Jefferson Davis as I am Abraham Lincoln. I do not believe we can hold Davis as evil or morally deficient. These are men who did what they sincerely believed was the right thing for their people. I happen to disagree with Davis on his tactics.

If we brush Davis off and let him sink into history we are creating a mythical martyr for the extremists and willfully neglecting our duties as historians.

Preservation Efforts : Breaking News! Battle at Gettysburg
Posted by Wayne_Fielder on 2007/7/4 16:40:00 (1057 reads)

Copied in it's entirety from the Rightwingnuthouse blog. Replaying the events of July 3, 1863 from a "blogger" perspective:

Washington is once again quiet this early morning but I don’t think it’s the result of people being sound asleep in their beds. First, there’s this God awful heat. For those of you who aren’t familiar with our climate here in Washington, imagine the worst mosquito infested swamp and then add oppressive, life draining heat. The mercury never fell below 85 degrees last night which made sleep impossible.

Preservation Efforts : Preservation by relocation?

Obviously, we haven't had much to say of late. For that I apologize and promise to post more here to keep the wheels from rusting together.

My guess is that everyone has heard about the guy who stole documents from the National Archives. No...no...not former National Security Advisor Sandy Berger. No, this particular waste of carbon offsets is called Denning McTague. Mr. McTaque stashed 164 original documents from the Civil War period in his notepad and walked out of the National Archives.

All but 3 of the documents have been recovered thanks to a publishing company in Gettysburg.

So what is the punishment for this crime?

McTague pleaded guilty to one federal count of stealing government property. He could receive up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine when he is sentenced July 12, but federal sentencing guidelines call for much less.

So the guidelines call for much less...like performing 100 hours of community service and pay a fine of $50,000 as well as $6,905 for the administrative costs of his two-year probation? We'll see I guess. I like the 10 years and quarter mil myself...for both of them.
